PROFILE

Naison Mutemeri is an upcoming protest artist. He is working on his first album and has so far produced two songs namely, ‘The best years of our lives’ and ‘Rebel with a cause’. He was born on 6 October 1979 and attended Gwinyai primary school then Mbare High Secondary.

It all started with one of Simon Chimbetu’s early shows in 1996. His drummer at that time, Brian Kabengele who was about 5"7 if not shorter was at his best that night. Naison was inspired. As soon as the show was finished he went home and made his own home made drum kit. The rest is history.

Coincidentally his first job as a drummer was at Naison Chimbetu’s G7 Commandos in 1997. In 1998 he was offered a job by R & K African Sounds a job which he accepted wholeheartedly .Before he  knew it he was in the studio recording their second album "RARAMO" which had a number 1 hit song Tina part 2.

At 2000 Genaguru music festival Chimbetu was on stage while Naison  was on the drums for R & K.A  few weeks later Naison  was performing at TSAMA awards picking up two awards with R & K and that successful year ended on a high note. Briam Chimbetu visited Naison at home in Mbare and offered him  a job.Naison  couldn't believe it as it was his dream to be a member of Orchestra Dendera Kings.

His first recording at Dendera Kings was the song "Siya Magumbeze"on the album African Panorama chapter 2, in 2001. He played drums on all tracks on Naison Chimbetu’ss album.A few months later he was in the studio again recording all the tracks on Simon Chimbetu’s album "Hoko".

Run up to 2002 elections Naison Mutemeri and other band members  were busy unfortunately performing at ZANUPF rallies all over the country including the inauguration at the State House, Independence day, Heroes day, 2001 Joshua Nkomo Gala.

Naison writes all his songs. There was good and evil and he chose good. Instead of repression he chose freedom. After choosing freedom he became an individual against the state, and as a result he has become a stranger in a strange land but he’s not SORRY!

Naison says, it is bad times which makes good times sweet, Never anticipate change unless you're participating. There are so many definitions to define music and there are so many ways in which music can be used. As it is music can be used to spread messages, pay tribute, show appreciation, celebrate and not forget to protest. Music makes the world go round and therefore it shouldn't be censored in a democratic society where freedom of speech is practised. Freedom of speech is a God given right not a right given by politicians or earned. My music is an art which in itself express my feelings, my thoughts, my vision sometimes my own life experience.
